Description Description

Thyme is a herb with a history of thousands of years and has been the symbol of nobility, courage, and wealth in ancient times. It was often used in Ancient Egypt because of its germicidal and protective properties. Its use in the area of health dates back to 1 AD when it was used as a mouthwash and as an antiseptic for wounds. It has been used in medieval Europe and England to cure many cases, from digestive problems to rheumatism. There are five species of thyme herb in Turkey named Thymus, Origanum, Satureja, Thymbra and Coridothymus. The main volatile components of these species are usually carvacrol or thymol or both (1).

The volatile oils acquired from herbs contain rich bioactive compounds such as terpenoids and phenolic acids. Carvacrol and thymol, the main components of the thyme herb, are bioactive compounds that exhibit significant in vitro antibacterial activity. While carvacrol exhibits antifungal, insecticidal, antioxygenic and antiparasitic activities; Thymol is an antimicrobial agent that shows very high antifungal activity and is also an excellent food antioxidant (2).

For thousands of years, scientists have used a wide variety of methods to benefit from the healing properties of herbs. EXTRACTs, obtained by the carbon dioxide supercritical fluid extraction method (SFE), which was developed to acquire bioactive components from herbs, make it possible to obtain almost all of the volatile bioactive components and other auxiliary active substances in herbs in a clean environment without oxidization. In the studies in the literature, carvacrol is acquired at 45.63 % and thymol at 15.72 %, whereas in Minerelax Thyme extract, carvactol is acquired at 72.42 % and thymol at around 1.69 % (3).

The extracts obtained by the SFE method are high-quality products that have not been oxidized and do not contain chemicals, together with their extensive effect on health.

For thousands of years, humankind has used a wide variety of methods to benefit from the healing properties of herbs.

It is known that the traditional methods, which are generally limited to acquiring certain active ingredients, have negative aspects as well, such as being susceptible to oxidation.
